ERLANGER, Ky. — A greater number of nonprofits will benefit from an ongoing program that provides grant opportunities to organizations working on behalf of residents in northern Kentucky.
The NKY Funders’ Grants program is in its second year with three new foundations including the Scripps Howard Foundation, participating in the program for the first time.
Through a series of mini-grant competitions, a total of eight foundations will bring more than $110,000 in funds to nonprofits serving northern Kentucky, according to a news release.
“By working together, we truly maximize our impact in the region for the common wealth, and the common good,” said Nancy Grayson, President of Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky. “For this year’s competition, Horizon Community Funds is proud to support organizations who work to improve the health and wellness of our community.”
The regional foundations (listed below) will each offer grant opportunities that focus on different issues:
- Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky (Health and Wellness)
- The Butler Foundation (Reducing Barriers to Employment)
- The Charles H. Dater Foundation (K-12 Programming)
- The R.C. Durr Foundation (Popular Vote)
- Greater Cincinnati Foundation (Addiction Services)
- Scripps Howard Foundation (Early Childhood Literacy)
- The Elsa Heisel Sule Foundation (Arts, Culture, and Humanities)
- United Way of Greater Cincinnati (Early Childhood Poverty Prevention)
With the grants, the Scripps Howard Foundation can further its mission “to create a better-informed world through journalism education and childhood literacy,” according to president and CEO Liz Carter.
“Access to books from an early age is proven to be an important predictor of a child’s success through their school years and beyond,” Carter said. “Literacy is a powerful antidote to poverty.”
Organizations that serve northern Kentucky should apply starting on July 1. There is an informational meeting for potential applicants from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 25 at the Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library.
The full timeline for the application process is below:
- June 25: Informational session
- July 1: Applications open online
- July 31: Deadline for applications
- Early September: Semifinalists announced
- Sept. 10: Semifinalist training at Life Learning Center in Covington
- Sept. 24: Semifinalist pitches at the RiverCenter Media Center in Covington
- Early October: Finalists announced
- Oct. 29: Final pitch competition at the St. Elizabeth Training & Education Center in Erlanger
Each partner will select two finalists in each focus area to pitch their project or program in front of an audience at the Oct. 29 event. First-place winners will receive $7,500, and second-place winners will receive $5,000.
A popular vote will determine an additional first-place winner and additional second-place winner.
